The Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative Ltd ("GFC") was established in the 1950's by a small group of fishermen with a vision to market their quality lobsters worldwide. Over 60 years later the commitment, expertise and teamwork of this group of fishermen have made GFC the largest processor of rock lobsters in the world, selling under the famous Brolos brand name. GFC is 100% owned by its fishermen and license holders. With their ingrained pride in their Brolos brand, you will find them every day in the waters up and down the WA coast, selecting only the best lobsters for you to enjoy. What's in a name? The Brolos brand
Once GFC's operations were underway, the founding members decided they needed a brand name to market their western rock lobster. Back then there was no marketing department or focus groups to determine a name. So the fishermen simply chose something they knew - "Brolos." Brolos is the abbreviation for the Abrolhos Islands, a remote island archipelago off the coast of Geraldton. It is thought that up to 50% of the western rock lobster biomass begins its life in this unique area.
The Abrolhos islands are where many fishers and their families carved out a unique life for themselves. Days spent hauling their catch from the pristine waters, before returning to brightly coloured fishing shacks on these low lying coral islands. "The Rock lobsters were delicious and driving to Welshpool is so much quicker than driving to Geraldton for really fresh WA lobster. Oh! and thanks for the range of suggested lobster receipts you made available at the collection point." - Graham, Nedlands.
